What do you do when you lose at yarn chicken?

You probably do what I have done: go scan the big social media site for crafters (you know the one, it rhymes with "cavalry"), and you find a user who has the yarn you want.

Unfortunately, each listing of your yarn is labeled "Not For Sale."

Long story short, that's where the idea for The Missing Skein came from...from learning the hard way!

A little about me: I learned to knit when I was just seven years old, taught by Maureen, an English woman who was a family acquaintance. I kept knitting through high school and even into college. I was an aspiring ballerina, and so I could whip up some knitted warm-ups to my heart's content. But then came a full-time job, and eventually a family, and twenty years slipped by before I knew it. Fast forward to a few years ago: I picked knitting back up, and I love it now just as much, if not more, than before.

I also rediscovered one of knitting's particular frustrations. You are happily working away on a sweater when you realize you are going to run out of yarn. No problem. You'll just buy another skein.

Except there isn't another skein.

The store is sold out. The color has been discontinued. The site that rhymes with "cavalry" doesn't have anyone willing to part with their stash. Or the store, website, or fellow yarn lover has the right yarn, but not your dye lot. Anyone who has ever tried to pretend two slightly different dye lots "aren't really that different" knows how that story ends.

The Missing Skein is a marketplace where knitters, crocheters, weavers, and others who love beautiful yarn can search for the yarn they need, including the specific dye lot, and where other knitters can sell yarn they no longer need or want. Indie dyers and local yarn shops can sell here too. Perhaps somewhere in Boston, Minneapolis, or Boca Raton, there is someone who has the exact yarn you've been searching for.

By the way, you certainly don't need to be in the middle of a yarn emergency to shop here. Sometimes you just want to look at yarn and envision your next project. Sometimes that's half the fun!
